Coral reefs are formed over thousands of years. They do not grow very fast and may take many years to recover from damage. Staghorn corals can grow up to 15 cm (centimeters/6 inches) in a year. However ’Massive corals’ such as star coral and brain coral grow mush slower, generally only about 1/8th to 3/4th of an inch per year. After many Generations of growth and death, structure like the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, which are millions of years old and hundreds of feet thick, have been formed.
